Should You Be Taking Minerals & Electrolytes?

We looked at every mineral and electrolyte product available in South Africa. Most of them failed our criteria immediately. Here is what the category gets wrong — and the one product that passed every test.

Ocean water — the source of Quinton marine minerals

We almost never recommend supplements. Our view is simple: you are not tired and depleted because you lack pills — you are tired because you live in an environment that works against you. Fix the environment first. Supplements are, at best, a correction for specific deficiencies the environment has created.

Minerals and electrolytes are the one category where we kept coming back to a recommendation. Not because the marketing is convincing — it rarely is — but because the underlying deficiency is real, well-documented, and almost impossible to address through diet alone.

Think of it like soil. Minerals are not a performance input — they are the substrate. You cannot grow a healthy plant in depleted soil by treating the leaves. Fix the soil, and the plant takes care of itself. The same logic applies here. This is not a category we entered looking to recommend something. It is a category where the evidence made it difficult not to.

Why most of us are already mineral deficient

Most people's mineral status has three causes.

The food has less in it than it used to

Decades of intensive agriculture have stripped the mineral content from South African soils. You can eat a balanced diet and still be chronically low in minerals — not because of what you eat, but because of what the food no longer contains.

The water has been stripped too

Municipal treatment and reverse osmosis filtration remove contaminants — and the naturally occurring minerals that water historically delivered. We have quietly eliminated one of the oldest sources of trace minerals from daily life.

Modern life burns through what little remains

Stress, sweat, poor sleep, caffeine, alcohol — all deplete minerals faster than most people replenish them. The symptoms are diffuse: fatigue that sleep does not fix, muscle cramps, poor recovery, disrupted sleep. None dramatic. All consistent with a substrate that has been quietly depleted.

"Every ingredient in a product should be there for one reason only: because it directly supports your health. Not because it makes the product cheaper to manufacture. Not because it improves shelf stability. Not because it makes the product taste better. If an ingredient is not there for you, it should not be there at all."

What the category gets wrong

We looked at everything available in South Africa. The problems we found were consistent across almost everything we reviewed.

The category is incorrectly framed
Every hydration brand promises to boost your energy, sharpen your focus, elevate your performance. Here is what they do not tell you: minerals do not boost anything. What they do is remove the drag. The fatigue you feel when mineral-deficient is not a lack of caffeine — it is your body running on a depleted substrate. Replenishing minerals restores what should have been there all along. There is a meaningful difference between a boost and a correction. The category has spent years selling the former while quietly delivering the latter.
Synthetic isolates
Most mineral supplements use isolated, synthetically produced compounds — cheap to manufacture, but poorly absorbed compared to minerals in their natural form.
Additives that are there for manufacturing, not health
Scan the back of most electrolyte products: sweeteners, flavourings, preservatives, colourants. These are not there for you — they are there to make the product cheaper to produce and easier to sell. If you are choosing a supplement to support your health, adding more additives in the same moment is the wrong direction.
Four minerals presented as complete
Most electrolyte products cover sodium, potassium, magnesium, and chloride — and stop there. The body requires dozens of other minerals and trace elements. Four is not a complete solution.
Differentiated by marketing, not composition
Most products in South African pharmacies and health stores are, in composition, almost identical. The differentiation is in flavours, packaging, and marketing — not in what is inside.

What we look for

When we evaluate a mineral or electrolyte product, we apply a short list of criteria. Most products fail on the first or second point. Very few make it through all of them.

Minimal ingredients
Every additive needs a reason to be there. We prefer products where the answer is obvious.
Bioavailability
It is not about how much is in the product — it is about how much your cells can actually use. Sometimes less is more.
Full-spectrum coverage
Not four electrolytes. The full range. The body does not run on four minerals.
No additives, sweeteners, or flavourings
If a product needs to be made palatable, the base formula is probably not something you would choose to consume on its own.
A transparent, verifiable source
Most supplements sold in South Africa are manufactured in Asian contract facilities. The origin of raw materials is rarely disclosed. We look for products with a source that can be independently verified.
Our Recommendation

Quinton Marine Minerals

The only product available in South Africa that met every one of our criteria

We applied our criteria to everything we could find in South Africa. Most products failed on multiple counts. A small number passed some. One passed all of them.

Quinton is cold-sterilised, raw seawater harvested from protected plankton blooms in the Atlantic Ocean. It contains over seventy minerals and trace elements in their natural ionic form — not four, not ten, but the full spectrum. No additives. No processing beyond sterilisation. No alteration to the mineral matrix. The ingredient is seawater.

It is the only product we found in South Africa that simultaneously replaces both primary electrolytes for fluid balance — sodium and potassium — and the full range of trace minerals the body depends on. Every other product we reviewed addressed one or the other, or neither completely.

It is also the only product we found with zero additives. No sweeteners, no flavourings, no preservatives, no colourants. If you are choosing a supplement to support your health, it should not come with a list of ingredients that exist purely for manufacturing convenience. Quinton does not.

And it is the only product that offers both Isotonic and Hypertonic formulations — not as a marketing distinction, but as a meaningful one. Not everyone needs the sodium load of an athlete's electrolyte for everyday use. Isotonic matches the mineral concentration of human plasma and is suited to daily replenishment. Hypertonic is more concentrated, suited to periods of high physical demand or significant depletion. The right formulation depends on what your body actually needs.

The source is not a contract facility in Asia. It is a specific, protected area of the Atlantic Ocean off the coast of France — the same source used since French biologist René Quinton first documented its properties over a century ago. The science is not new. What is unusual is that a product built on it is still available, unchanged, in its original form.

"We have not found another product available in South Africa that meets all of our criteria. We have looked."

Isotonic
Matches the mineral concentration of human plasma. Suited to daily use, general mineral replenishment, and recovery. Works for everyone — from children to elderly.
Hypertonic
A more concentrated formulation suited to periods of high physical or mental demand, intense exercise, or significant mineral depletion.

We continue below with context on who Quinton is best suited for.

A note on where you are starting from

Quinton is our gold standard — the product we would choose if we could only choose one. But health is a journey. If a flavoured electrolyte is your next step from sodas and energy drinks, that is genuine progress. A reasonable compromise for where you are.

What we want you to understand is that it is not the destination. As your awareness of what you are putting into your body grows, so will your appetite for something cleaner. Quinton is where that journey ends.

Who it is for

If you exercise regularly
Particularly in South Africa's heat — you are losing minerals through sweat at a rate most people underestimate. Quinton Hypertonic before or during training, and Isotonic for daily replenishment, covers the full spectrum of what you are losing.
If you are frequently fatigued
And sleep does not seem to fix it — mineral insufficiency is one of the more common and underdiagnosed contributors. It is worth addressing before looking elsewhere.
If you are pregnant or breastfeeding
The mineral demands on the body increase significantly. Quinton Isotonic has been used in clinical settings in Europe for this purpose for decades.
If you are on a restricted diet
The mineral gaps that accumulate over time are real. Quinton does not replace food, but it addresses the mineral dimension of what restricted diets often miss.
If you simply want a clean, complete mineral supplement
With no additives and no compromises — this is the one we recommend.

Our position

We do not recommend supplements lightly. Our view is that most of what gets marketed as essential is neither. The environment you live in, the food you eat, the water you drink, the stress you carry — these are the variables that determine how you feel. Supplements are, at best, a correction for specific deficiencies that the environment has created. Most of the time, the better answer is to fix the environment.

Quinton fits that framing precisely. It is not a performance enhancer. It is not a wellness trend. It is a correction for a specific, documented problem — the progressive removal of minerals from our food, our water, and our environment — using a source that is as close to nature as anything available.

Go back to the soil analogy. You cannot fix a depleted plant by treating the leaves. You fix the soil. Quinton is the closest thing we have found to fixing the soil. That is why we recommend it — not because it is exciting, but because it is right.

Our pick — Quinton

This is the product we actually use. The only one available in South Africa with full-spectrum ionic minerals, zero additives, and a verifiable natural source.

Isotonic for daily use · Hypertonic for performance and recovery
